Don't get caught out by travelling with your mobile phone overseas. If you're not careful you could be charged huge bills. By reading this simply guide you'll be fully prepared when taking your mobile phone abroad.

Taking Your Mobile Phone Abroad...

With so many of us now choosing to take our mobile phone on holiday it's no wonder mobile phones make up one of the top five things taken away. Even so, you need to make sure you've make the correct planning when travelling with your mobile phone.

When you and your family are taking your mobile phones abroad you need to check a few things with your Network provider first so your mobile phone actually works - International roaming enabled - and that you aren't charge extortionate rates.

Travelling With Your Mobile Phone ...

When travelling with your mobile phone make sure you contact your Network provider to check the following:

  • Check your phone will work overseas and arrange for it to be set up for 'International Roaming'. It takes up to 14 days so do this as soon as you know you are travelling.

  • Ask if your handset will actually work in the Country you're visiting i.e. if going to America you'll need to be on tri-band.

  • Ask how much International roaming calls will cost as this might effect the amount you use your mobile phone.

  • Ask your Network provider if you can upgrade or change your tariff to include overseas calls.

  • Check if there are any deals relating to calls made from the Country/region you are travelling to i.e Europe or Asia rather than World-wide.
Here are the contact telephone numbers for the UK's Network Provider's customer services departments.

Mobile Phones Abroad - frequent use ...

See if it's possible to change your tariff or to upgrade it, to one that includes overseas calls. This is especially good if you are a frequent traveller. However, do check how much this would cost and work out carefully if this is the better option for you, and also how long you'd be tied into any contract for.

Or it's worth looking into using a temporary International SIM card for use when you are travelling with your mobile phone. However, do check the card doesn't have an expiry date, and if so that it's after you've returned from your travels.

International SIM cards can be bought in most International airports and selected UK retailers.

Don't be one of the hundreds of people who forget to pack an electrical adapter for their phone charger when taking their mobile phones abroad!

Mobile Phones On Holiday ...

Once your landed and left the plane, turn your mobile phone on as usual. You don't then have to do anything to make the phone work, it locates the local transmitter and you are free to make and receive calls.

Although, even though you've activated your mobile phone on the International Roaming function, your phone still acts as if it was UK based. So if you're making a call in France, to a UK friend also in France, your call is diverted back to the UK - travelling a huge 1,800 miles! - even though it's using a local phone transmitter. Not only that, but your friend who picks up your call will also be charged to receive the 'overseas' call.

This is why mobile phone rates from overseas are so much and this is why we urge you to look into the cheapest way for you to make calls abroad.

Important Contact Numbers...

It's worth, in the event of any emergency or accident, that you add these numbers to your mobile before you set off:

  • Your travel insurance provider's contact numbers

  • Telephone number of the nearest British Embassy to where you are going to be staying

  • Telephone number of your Hotel / Tour Operator

Important Numbers - Government Offices and Agencies
  Foreign & Commonwealth Office Enquiries +44 (0) 207 008 1500

Securing Your Mobile Phone Abroad ...

So many of us consider travelling with our mobile phones yet don't think about what would happen if they were lost or stolen.

Firstly you need to write down your mobile's serial/IMEI number, and keep it in a separate place to where you'll be keeping your phone. On the same piece of paper write down the mobile's telephone number along with the number of your Network provider's customer services department. When you usually call your Network provider do they need any other unofficial information to verify they are talking to you? If so write this down too, like a pin number or password.

This way you can arrange for your mobile phone to be cancelled or blocked straight away.

Whilst you may have taken out travel insurance check it covers a mobile phone being lost or stolen. You'll find that your policy probably doesn't cover this so it may be something you want to add to your premium.
