DVT - Deep Vein Thrombosis ... |
|
|
|
|
|
| DVT |
| |
| Deep Vein Thrombosis is caused when the blood clots deep in on of the veins of the thigh, calf or pelvis. Normally as a result of the blood flow becoming very slow (due to the cramped conditions of an aircraft and limited exercise) and dehydrated. And sometimes as a result of the passenger undergoing recent childbirth or body trauma like abdominal surgery. |
| |
| Persons at Risk of DVT |
| |
- Air travellers over 40
- Past and/or family history DVT
- Recent surgery, especially abdominal or leg surgery, and injury to the hips or knees
- A pregnant traveller or one who's recently had a baby
- Cancer, and some cancer treatments.
- Heath and circulation problems
- Obesity
|
| Try to a void DVT |
| |
- Drink lots of water during your flight but also 24 hours before and avoid water or fruit juices to keep hydrated and avoid alcohol and caffeine
- Travel in loose fitting clothing
- Exercise your lower leg muscles and stretch out your feet
- Walk up and down the cabin every 1 or 2 hours
- Wear 'flight socks' that are graduated compression stockings
|
| DVT symptoms |
| |
Deep Vein Thrombosis in itself, is quite uncomfortable, but the main concern is where a piece of the blood clot, called a pulmonary embolus, breaks off and moves to the right side of the heart, causing heart problems or even heart attack.
Often DVT shows no obvious signs, however some passengers may suffer from the following: |
| |
- Soreness and aching in the calf
- Swelling in the ankles or calf
- Moderate fever, feeling unwell.
- NB - sometimes symptoms don't start for several days or even weeks
|
| "I think I have DVT" |
| |
If you think you might have Deep Vein Thrombosis then call you doctor immediately. Treatment is relatively simple in most cases.
If you're overseas then get in touch with your holiday rep or airline straight away or visit a local hospital. |

Painful Ears - Cabin Pressure... |
|
|
|
|
|
| |
| If you suffer from painful ears when your flight is taking off and landing then it's due to the different cabin pressure on the aircraft. The pressure is much lower pressure than we're use to at ground level and there's slightly less oxygen in the cabin. |
| |
- On take-off or landing drink or chew so you are swallowing often, making your ears pop
- Avoid alcohol when flying as it has 2 to 3 times the effect of a drink at sea level.
- Dehydration is a big problem on longer flights - drink plenty of water, avoiding alcohol and caffeine drinks

|
| |
|
|
| |
|
| |
| Motion sickness, especially when turbulence is experienced, is fairly common. Try some of the following remedies: |
| |
- Request a window seat or one over the wings
- Avoid all alcoholic drinks 24hrs before flight
- Keep your seat belt on at all times
- Natural remedies for motion sickness include:
|
- Vitamin B6 to help against dizziness
- Magnesium to reduce stomach acidity and stress
- Peppermint to prevent feeling sick and vomiting
- Ginkgo Bilboa is good for chronic dizziness and light-headedness
- Nausea can be prevented by taking ginger extract
|
- Consult your doctor about motion sickness if necessary.

| |
- Carry all required medicines in your hand luggage - packing more than you need to cover any delays that might be experienced
- And ID and notification card should be carried by diabetes or epilepsy patients
- Inform the airline, before travel, of any medical problems
- Always check what vaccinations you might need

Symptoms & Cures Of Jet Lag ... |
|
|
|
| |
|
| |
| Jet lag tends to be worse the more time zones a passenger has travelled through. And also it can be worse when travelling east . Jet lag causes, mostly, fatigue and disrupts sleep. Here are some tips, but don't despair. Jet lag normally disappears after a few days. |
| |
- Move your meal and sleep times more towards your destination time, say eat a hour or so later or earlier
- Set your watch to the new time of the Country you're travelling to once you've taken off
- Small meals and lots of water should be eaten before a flight
- Caffeine drinks are good to help mask fatigue symptoms during the days after flying
- Natural sleeping pills are good for the night time, or if your symptoms are very bad speak to your doctor
- A short nap during the day can help you feel better during the day but only have 2 of these, lasting no longer than 30 minutes
- Ginseng helps fight fatigue and is widely available from health food stores
