Preparing To Leave - general tips... |
By applying these simple, general tips on preparing to leave home for your holiday or business trip you can do your best to avoid any holiday blues on your return home.
And home security is the most important one - many of these following general tips will help disguise the fact you are away for a while, thus protecting your home.
- Make sure you cancel deliveries like milk and newspapers that when built up on your doorstep show you aren't home.
- Don't order items that will be sent by Recorded Delivery post, because it'll be returned to the sender if not collected within one week from the Post Office.
- Don't forget to cancel any doctor's, dentist's or such like appointments so you don't have to pay any non-attendance fees.
- Arrange for a family, a member of your family or a neighbour to visit your home to collect up post from the doorstep, water your garden and pot plants
- Throw away, or use up, any perishable items in your fridge
- As a safety measure switch off all the plug sockets powering electrical items like your TV, PC etc.
- Save some money (and energy) by turning off your central heating and hot water in the Summer. In the Winter turn both of them right down, but don't turn off altogether otherwise, if a hard frost, it could cause problems with your pipe work.
- Don't forget about your pets - arrange for a cattery or kennel to take them in, not forgetting to pack some of their favourite toys. Or arrange for your pets to be looked after by someone either at your home or theirs.

Luggage Allowances & Packing Tips ... |
When you're packing your bags you need to make sure you aren't going over the luggage allowance set by your airline. Check what this allowance is by looking at the reverse of your flight ticket.
However, normally the weight of each bag, per person, for main baggage is 70lbs/32kgs. If you go over this weight you'll be liable for a fine to carry the luggage onto the plane and you'll also be required to repack the bags into smaller ones to spread the excess weight. If you don't choose to pay the fine you'll have to unpack your luggage so it conforms to the weight allowances, with any unpacked luggage being destroyed.
If however it is necessary that you do need to travel with excess baggage - or large or outsized baggage - do get in touch with your airline before you travel to check their policies and procedures on additional luggage and to avoid any embarrassing moments at check-in.
At check-in you'll be required to answer a number of questions about your luggage including who packed it and what's inside. Checks will also be made to see if you are carrying any restricted or prohibited items -
items that are not allowed to be packed in your hand luggage or main luggage can be found by visiting the Security section of this website. |
