Approximately 2 Million passengers per year
  One main passenger terminal
Approximately 10 scheduled Airlines fly to over 20 destinations
Cardiff International Airport extends back 60 years to the early 1940's, when the Air Ministry requisitioned land in the rural Vale of Glamorgan to set up a wartime satellite aerodrome and training base for RAF Spitfire pilots.

From 1931 to 1954, the original Cardiff Airport operated at Pengam Moors in Cardiff Bay.  Construction work began in 1941 to convert the existing site into a fully operating airfield, which later began life in 1942.

In the early 1950’s, the commercial potential of the runway was recognised and Aer Lingus started a service to Dublin in 1952.

A new terminal building followed and charter holidays escalated meaning passenger numbers increased to 100,000 in 1962.

In 1965, the control of the Airport was transferred from the Ministry of Defence to Glamorgan County Council.

With the arrival of transatlantic flights, further investment in the development of the terminal and control tower began in 1971, and the runway was doubled in length to enable the airport to accommodate larger bodied aircraft.

Passenger levels soared to 250,000 in the early 1980’s with the growth in popularity of charter flights.

In 1990, the Airports scheduled services meant that passenger levels now exceeded 100,000.

By 1993, passenger numbers had rocketed to just under 750,000, and in 1993, a series of major airport expansion projects commenced.

In 1995, In April 1995, due to planned Local Government re-organisation in Wales, the Airport Company was privatised, with shares being sold to Welsh property and development firm, TBI Plc.

Since the privatisation, Cardiff International Airport's success has continued, ranking as one of the UK's most successful regional airports.
